If a permanent tooth is knocked out, can it be saved?
Yes, but you'll need to act quickly. A permanent tooth must be replaced in its socket as soon as possible -- ideally within 15 minutes. After two hours, it may be too late.
Here's what to do at the scene of the accident: First, rinse off the tooth with saliva or milk. (Do not rinse with water -- the chlorine in water can damage the root.)
Hold the tooth by the crown (top), not by the root, and replace it in the socket. Be sure to position the tooth facing in the right direction. Gently press down with your thumb until the tooth is level with adjacent teeth Bite down softly on a wad of clean cloth to keep the tooth in place. Call your dentist for an emergency appointment.
If you can't reposition the tooth in your mouth, ha tuck the tooth in his mouth between your cheek and gum to protect it. Keeping the tooth moist that way is essential to keeping it alive..
If the area is bleeding, put cold water on a piece of gauze and apply it gently to the site for a few minutes (or until the bleeding stops). A frozen juice or dessert bar can limit the swelling and has the added benefit of taking your mind off the pain.
Over the next week, watch for signs of infection, such as fever or swelling and tenderness. Call your doctor immediately if you think the wound is infected.

EMERGENCY DENTAL STEPS TO TAKE IF YOU ARE HURTING :
Natural choices to speed healing for sore, bleeding gums
In addition to practicing good oral hygiene and visiting your dentist for periodontal cleaning at least once annually, there are several supplements that you can take to help heal irritated and bleeding gums.
Vitamin C, flavonoids, coenzyme Q10
All three substances are powerful antioxidants that help preserve gum tissue and hasten healing. By promoting immunity, they help curb the bacteria that attack the gums. Coenzyme Q10 has been shown to decrease the depth of the pockets that form between the teeth and gums. It also appears to speed healing and reduce bleeding from gum disease as well as decrease the recovery period after dental surgery.
Vitamin C and mixed flavonoids, which are most effective when taken together, appear to build up connective tissue in the gums and reduce inflammation.
Commonly Suggested Dose:
Vitamin C/flavonoids: Take 1,000 mg of vitamin C along with 500 mg of mixed flavonoids twice a day. Reduce dose of vitamin C if diarrhea develops. Coenzyme Q10: 50 mg twice a day. Take with food for best absorption. In rare cases, CoQ10 may cause digestive upset.
Calcium
Adequate calcium is essential to maintain the health of bones and teeth. Calcium supplements can strengthen the bone in which the teeth are anchored, helping prevent tooth loss.
Commonly Suggested Dose: 1-gram calcium a day.
Take with food for best absorption. Check with your doctor about taking high doses of calcium if you have kidney disease.
Vitamin A
Deficiencies of this vitamin greatly lower resistance to infection, so adequate intake of vitamin A is essential. Vitamin A also helps promote healing of inflamed gums.
Commonly Suggested Dose: 25,000 IU of vitamin A daily.
Take with food. A little fat in the diet aids absorption. If you're pregnant or considering pregnancy, don't take more than 5,000 IU of vitamin A daily.
Vitamin E, folic acid liquid, vitamin C powder
These vitamin supplements, when applied topically, may decrease gum inflammation and bleeding. Applying the contents of a vitamin E capsule to inflamed gum tissue every third day should stimulate more rapid healing. On day two, you can apply folic acid liquid to the gums, and on day three, brush with a paste containing vitamin C and water. All these topical therapies should be carried out twice daily, after you brush your teeth.
Suggested Dose: Vitamin E: 400 IU capsule (broken open) every third day.
After brushing teeth morning and night, break capsule open and rub contents evenly across gum line, using your finger of a cotton swab. Alternate every third day with folic acid liquid and vitamin C gum treatments.
Folic acid liquid: A swab of folic acid liquid every third day.
After brushing teeth morning and night, dip a swab in folic acid liquid and apply to gums. Make sure you're also getting vitamin B1 in your daily multivitamin when using folic acid in any form.
Vitamin C powder: 1/2 to 1 teaspoon every third day.
Apply a little water to the vitamin C to make slurry. After brushing teeth morning and night, brush the vitamin C paste along gum line. Look for non-acidic vitamin C powders in the form of ascorbate, which don't harm tooth enamel; ascorbic acid, the acidic form of the vitamin, is cheaper but may cause erosion. Rinse mouth with water afterward.
Natural mouth rinses
Effectiveness
The various supplements recommended for gum disease should be taken together to speed healing of sore and bleeding gums. You should observe benefits within two weeks. Individuals who are at high risk for gum disease, including those under unusual stress, can take the supplements long term, or as needed, for prevention.
Call the dentist if...
You are experiencing red, swollen gums or loose teeth. Prompt treatment can help preserve your teeth.
Your gums bleed easily after brushing or flossing, and bleeding gums persist for a week or longer.
HOME CARE FOR HEALTHY GUMS
Home care to prevent normal gum changes from becoming more unpleasant and severe includes:
Eating more fruits and vegetables, which are rich in vitamin C. A calcium- rich diet is also good for your teeth.
Swishing with an antiseptic mouthwash several times a day. Spit it out; don't swallow it.
Using a soft bristle toothbrush that does not cause your gums to bleed.
Brushing more frequently, and certainly after each meal. Get used to carrying an extra toothbrush and tube of toothpaste in your purse or briefcase.
Flossing regularly, at least once a day.
Considering the use of an ultrasonic toothbrush, which is more effective than a regular toothbrush in removing plaque. It may also be friendlier to your sensitive gums.
Avoiding sticky candy and other sweets. Toffee, figs, and other sticky stuff is likely to collect in the swollen crevices, so satisfy your sweet tooth with less sticky stuff.
Regular visits to your dentist will also help you stay on top of the health of your gums.
Clove Oil Toothache Relief
Clove oil toothache relief has been used for centuries. The oil soothes tooth pain and has the characteristic smell that many older dental offices used to have. Dentists mix the oil with zinc oxide to make a white temporary filling material that calms tooth pain down. This soothing temporary filling is used to replace a dental filling in a tooth that is hurting with the hopes that the tooth will calm down enough to later have a permanent filling without the need for a root canal.
Most pharmacies sell small bottles of the oil or patients can buy commercial temporary filling materials containing clove oil. Another name for clove oil is eugenol. It can be placed on a small piece of cotton and stuck into a tooth cavity to give temporary clove oil toothache relief. This can be effective for 60 to 90 minutes. A new cotton ball soaked with clove oil can replace the old one at this time.
Temporary fillings
are made of two major components: Oil of clove (eugenol), which has been used for centuries to relieve toothaches, and Zinc Oxide powder which is the ingredient that makes Desitin diaper rash ointment white DENTISTS DON'T USE DESITIN DIAPER RASH OINTMENT , THEY USE ZINC OXIDE POWDER. Zinc oxide is an excellent disinfectant. (The dental kits for temporary filling are composed of eugenol and zinc oxide ,and might be just as cost effective as making your own . It is very hard to find zinc oxide powder.-sl)
The oil and oxide mix together to make a stiff paste that eventually hardens into a water resistant substance.
What to Do in a Dental Emergency When You're All Alone
There is nothing worse than being on your honeymoon, in-flight, on a camping trip, or on a long car ride when it strikes -- an unrelenting toothache so severe you feel like you want to die. Knowing what to do can prevent major discomfort.
Fortunately, the chance of an unforeseen dental crisis can usually be prevented by early detection and treatment of dental disease. When dental disaster does strike (and it always seems to be at the most inopportune time), knowing how to alleviate the pain is invaluable information everyone can use.
A toothache is any pain or soreness within or around a tooth, indicating inflammation and possible infection. Generally, a toothache occurs if tooth decay is very close to or has penetrated the pulp chamber that contains nerves and tiny blood vessels. Ideally, it's best to undergo dental treatment.
Toothache caused by trapped food: rinse the area with warm water and swish it about. It may loosen whatever is causing the pain. Alternatively, a cotton ball soaked in lime juice can be placed on the tooth. You can also try using this poultice: Steep a teaspoon of yarrow in hot water, drain the liquid with a piece of gauze, and then put it on the tooth.
Over-the-counter pain relievers to cure toothaches : paracetamol, aspirin and acetaminophen. If you feel that a small swelling has occurred, you may take non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID) for their inflammatory components, like ibuprofen and mefenamic acid. (However, those with a history of ulcers as well as pregnant women need a doctor's recommendation before taking NSAID and aspirin.)
Rubbing aspirin on your gums to numb an aching will do more harm than good. Aspirin contains salicylic acid, which can burn and damage gum tissue. Try pain-relieving gels like Anbesol or Orajel."
Home remedies for a toothache include: rinsing your mouth with salt water or dabbing some clove oil directly on the bad tooth. Clove oil has bacteria-slaying properties, along with a remarkable numbing effect. Also try the numbing power in cooled peppermint tea. Swish, then swallow if you like the flavor.
Most challenging are toothaches that stem from inside a tooth. But in cases where a lost filling or a broken tooth is causing the pain, "caulking" the sore tooth with softened chewing gum can ease the pain.
Canker sores:check to see if their toothpaste contains sodium lauryl sulfate, or SLS. SLS is a foaming agent that in some studies has been linked to the development of canker sores. An additional remedy for both canker sores and gum pain is tea tree oil. Tea tree oil should be applied directly to the infected site and can even be purchased in mouthwash form to soothe inflammation. Another preventive measure for canker sores is to avoid eating chips and other jagged foods that can cause tiny cuts and scrapes, which can be an entryway for a virus. Besides that, stay away from foods that trigger canker sores. Potential troublemakers include whole wheat, rye, barley, shellfish, pineapple, chocolate and tomatoes.
Gum problems: Ginseng can be used to alleviate the pain associated with irritated gum tissue. A ginseng tonic can be directly applied to the gum to promote circulation and speed healing. An additional home remedy suggestion is to use a wet tea bag for tooth or gum pain. Tea contains astringent tannins, which have the power to shrink swollen tissue and stop bleeding.
Putting an ice pack on your face over the area that hurts also may relieve the pain. Apply the ice for 10 to 20 minutes of every hour, as necessary.
Toothache Relief
A toothache is any pain or soreness within or around a tooth or jaw. The most common cause of toothache is a dental cavity.
Bacteria in the mouth can form plaques that stick to teeth and form acids that eat through tooth enamel, causing a cavity. Toothache pain is usually worse when you eat cold or hot food.
Other common causes of toothache are gum disease, tooth abscess, cracked tooth, irritated tooth root, or a condition called temporomandibular joint which affects the jaw.
Toothaches can also be a sign of heart attack, ear infections, and sinusitis
Clove oil compress
Clove oil contains eugenol, a natural pain killer and antibacterial. Mix 2 to 3 drops of pure clove oil with 1/4 teaspoon olive oil. Saturate a cotton ball with the mixture and place the cotton ball beside the tooth.
If the toothache involves a molar at the back of your mouth,
you can bite down gently on the cotton ball to keep it in place. Leave it there for as long as possible (but don't go to sleep with it in your mouth.) Pain relief should begin quite rapidly.
Side effects :
Undiluted clove oil inside the mouth can causing burning, tissue or nerve damage, and pain. In large doses, clove oil taken orally can cause vomiting, sore throat, seizure, difficulty breathing, kidney failure, or liver damage.
Children, pregnant or nursing women, and people with diabetes, kidney or liver disease or bleeding disorders should avoid taking clove oil.
Activated charcoal compress
Activated charcoal is available at many drug stores and natural health food stores.
Mix two teaspoons of activated charcoal powder with just enough water to make a paste. Apply it to a piece of gauze and place the gauze on the tooth. Bite down.
